1. Local Optimum Problem in K-Means Now that you have learned the k-means clustering algorithm, let’s take a look at how the initial choice of cluster locations can affect the result of the algorithm. The k-means algorithm is an optimization problem that iteratively makes steps towards the “best” placement for the clusters. However, the algorithm can get stuck in a placement for the clusters that appears “best” locally, but a better solution could exist.

(a) For our first diagram, let’s consider the difference equation used to compute Fibonacci numbers: x(t) = x(t − 1)+ x(t − 2). By looking at this equation, we can see that the output at time t is the sum of the output of the previous two time steps. Therefore, we can write this equation as a block diagram using delay elements and a summation element. Draw the block diagram. (b) Now, let’s cons...

Why are such questions natural? Because a complex number can be viewed as a pair of real numbers. So, when we take n real numbers and transform them into n complex numbers, it is natural to wonder where the extra n real numbers have come from? Here we will see how the DFT exhibits something that we can call “conjugate symmetry” and that really, there are only n real numbers that determine every...

In Homework 1, we did a problem where we calculated the parameters of the Framingham risk score for predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this problem, we will revisit the parameters of the Framingham risk score in a more realistic setting using the more sophisticated optimization tool of linear least squares. In the problem in Homework 1, we determined four parameters of Framingham risk ...

2. Lecture Attendance This question is a student trust-based system for giving credit to those who attend lecture and help the course out by doing so. Lying on this (or any other part of the homework) constitutes academic dishonesty, and more importantly than any academic sanctions, lying would damage your honor and integrity. Be honest. You will carry your honor and integrity with you for the ...
